Recruit Dietrich

The Shield of Illier quests were added in v26.32.48. This quest guide is based on American game client (v26.60.82). In v27.56.86, the drop rates of various quest items will be improved. You do not need any items, but you must have Adriana (or Cadet Adriana) to initiate some NPC dialogues.

Synopsis :

The royal guard commander Dietrich is bored, so she decided to find a way to screw Duke Bethel over. She visits the slums to give some money, but Lynn previously warned them not to trust her since she does not want them to become a political tool for Dietrich.

Duke Bethel asks you to watch Dietrich who is on probation and has gone to Bernier Mansion. You catch up to Dietrich and beat off some vanguards. Duke Bethel claims that surviving assassinations only proves one's competence and is expected for nobles of Illier.

Dietrich implores you to investigate the reason Duke Bethel is so keen on demolishing Bernier Mansion. You discover that they are secretly developing something under the pretense of demolishment. Dietrich thinks it is a weapon to help Bagellan Witchcraft Troops and Bethel Vanguards to fight against Herbert Knights and Shausen Ironsides.

You find Polluted Otite in the mansion, where Leona thinks Truman is hiding. You stop the machine soldiers from leaving the mansion, and Dietrich wants to search for Stratavista on the second floor.

You find Duke Bethel's contract in the mansion, and stop various monsters from taking Magical Rose Stems to the second floor. Dietrich leads Evora troops across the Apians River, only to run into a fight with Duke Bethel and his vanguards. As a civil war nearly breaks out, Lynn and Leona convinces Dietrich to stop as the chaos of a civil war may invite Targa to invade Illier.

Dietrich reports the incident to the archon, but Count Bagellan takes the fall and resigned as commander of Witchcraft Troops. Lynn asks Dietrich to remember the pledge of the Herbert Knights: "Wield a sword with a cold icy heart."

After attempting to recruit you, Dietrich asks you to recover the runes of Talos for Valeron to repair her sword. After her sword has been repaired, Dietrich challenges Duke Bethel to a duel. She claims that they have come too far for unity, one of them has to die eventually to unite Illier.

At Lynn's advice, you bring Adriana to meet Dietrich, who were rivals 10 years ago. Adriana tells her that a leader must be two-faced so she can be level-headed and yet embrace the people. Agreeing with her rival, Dietrich decides to see more of the world by joining your family.

Prerequisites: Completed The Symphonia Episode 2-1 scenario.

1. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
2. Talk to Captain of Hunters Jason in Bethel Great Plain (C9).
3. Talk to Lynn in Bethel (D2).
4. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
5. Talk to Monblant Bethel in Bethel (F3). Choose a route:
• "Keep an eye on her." - Go to Surveillance quest.
• "We do not want to do this." - Go to Raid of the Vanguard quest.

Prerequisites: Completed On Probation quest (see above) by agreeing to keep Dietrich under surveillance.

1. Talk to Amy in Bethel City (D3).
2. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion Entrance (I6).
3. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).
4. Collect Vanguard Insignia (quest item) x1 by killing Mansion Candle Geister (2%) in Bernier Mansion 1F.
• In v27.56.86, the drop rate will be improved to 10%.
5. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3) and give the above item.
6. Trigger a combat mission ("Truman and the Bernier Mansion", 30 minutes) in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).
• Defeat Portero, Auto Baron, and General Deus Machina.
• Dietrich will help you, but she must remain alive.
7. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
8. Talk to Monblant Bethel in Bethel (F3).

[135][The Shield of Illier] Raid of the Vanguard
Prerequisites: Completed On Probation quest (see above) by refusing to keep Dietrich under surveillance.

1. Talk to Amy in Bethel (D3).
2. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion Entrance (I6).
3. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).
4. Trigger a combat mission ("Raid of the Vanguard", 30 minutes) in Bernier Mansion 1F (H7).
• Defeat all the Vanguards.
• Dietrich will help you, but she must remain alive.
5. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
6. Talk to Monblant Bethel in Bethel (F3).

Prerequisites: Completed Surveillance or Raid of the Vanguard quest (see above).
Reward: Master G EXP Card x3.

1. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
2. Talk to Land Agent Vertov in Bethel (E10).
3. Collect Magical Rose Seed (quest item) x10 by killing Fire/Ice/Lightning Deus Machina (10%) in Bernier Mansion 1F.
• In v27.56.86, the drop rate will be improved to 25%.
4. Talk to Land Agent Vertov in Bethel (E10) to give the above items.
5. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
6. Collect Polluted Otite (quest item) x1 by killing General Deus Machina (100%) in Bernier Mansion 1F (J9).
• Alternatively, you can buy General Deus Machina Spinelle for 12,000,000 Vis in Ustiur Base Camp (F5). Summon and kill it in Thueringen Lakeside.
• Tip: Although its DEF is quite high, General Deus Machina can be inflicted with Burn status and Electric Shock (DEF 0) status by Viki's Tenderaiser and Auto Baron V.
7. Talk to Leona in Bethel (D2) to give the above item.
8. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5) for reward.

[135][The Shield of Illier] Rose Bushes
Prerequisites: Completed the quest above.

1. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5) on the next day.
2. Trigger a combat mission ("Rose Bushes", 30 minutes) in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).
• Defend the Closed Gate from the Lifeless monsters for 5 minutes.
• Tip: Use a tank (Sirius) or Emilia with Invulnerable skill to run quickly to a big room (e.g. D7) and just wait it out... It seems the monsters have a tendency to go after you instead. This could be a bug that may be patched later.
• Tip: If the above doesn't work, move to a corner and let the gate tank. Use characters with area attacks (Montoro, Elementalist, etc.) to clear the monsters. Use Emilia's Invulnerable skill on the attackers if they kill in 1 hit.
• Tip: Do not try to tank the monsters. There are too many. Even 3 tanks are not enough to provoke all the monsters away from the gate.

3. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).
4. Collect Donation Contract of Duke Bethel (quest item) x1 by killing Mansion Candle Geister (2%) in Bernier Mansion 1F.
• In v27.56.86, the drop rate will be improved to 10%.
5. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3) to give the above item.
6. Collect Magical Rose Stem (quest item) x50 by killing Fire/Ice/Lightning Deus Machina (8%) in Bernier Mansion 1F.
• In v27.56.86, the drop rate will be improved to 20%.
7. Trigger a quest dialogue in Bernier Mansion 1F (F3).

1. Trigger a combat mission ("Cross the Apians River", 30 minutes) in Bethel Great Plain (E7).
• Defeat all the human enemies.
• Dietrich and Evora soldiers will help you, but Dietrich must remain alive.
• Tip: Use a tank (Sirius) to draw the enemies from Dietrich and your damage dealers.

3. Collect Rune of Eternity: Talos (quest item) x3 by killing Primordial Talos (5%/10%/25%) in Talos (Expert/Master/High Master) mission.
• The mission is available from Bethel Training Controller in Bethel (F8/G8).
• You can do the mission for free 1/day. Subsequent entries require Mission Accomplishment: Evora, which is available from The Symphonia Daily Quests.
• In v27.56.86, the drop rate will be improved to 25%/50%/100%.
4. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5) to give the above items and receive reward.

Prerequisites: Completed the quest above.

1. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5) on the next day.
2. Trigger a combat mission ("The Great Battle", 30 minutes) in Bethel (F3).
• Defeat Bethel with a quest version of Dietrich (MCC1).
• Your own team will be disabled for the mission.
• Tip: Use Dietrich's personal skill (Virtus) and 2nd skill (Wish) at the start.
• Tip: Engage Bethel directly, and use her attack skills to knock him down whenever he starts to cast a skill.
3. Talk to Dietrich in Bethel (C5).
4. Talk to Lynn in Bethel (D2).
